A work report of the ministry of gender, labour and social development presented on Wednesday shows that 1,843 of the cases reported have been concluded while the rest are under probe. In 2013, the ministry introduced toll-free line 116 which is accessible on all networks where people call and report cases of child abuse to the call centre. Orphans and vulnerable children empowerment group (OVCEG) is a registered Community Based Organisation (CBO) operating in Buvuma district and is known by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development under Registration Number 429/2016. It began its official operations in October 2012 under the umbrella organisation Buvuma development agency. Its aim is to mitigate the educational, nutritional and health related needs of critically vulnerable orphaned children, Adolescent girls and young women, key populations and impoverished windows in Buvuma District.
Enhance social economic capacities of communities for sustainable development among the vulnerable groups of society.
Improvement in the welfare of vulnerable groups especially children, women, youth and elderly through income generating activities.
Our current program include Community HIV Index Testing, Adolescent Girls And Young Women (AGYWs), fighting gender based violence (GBC), helping orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), HTS, WASH, Nutritional programs, HIV/AIDS prevention and care, family planning, and Agricultural intervention.
These programs are implemented through holistic community Engagement and participatory approach supported by the local population, district and donors.
the national population census report 2014, 6.2% of children aged 0-17 years in Buvuma Islands are
orphans, 23.3% of young girls aged 10-19 years have been married, 25.5% of
those girls have given birth and the rate of school dropout is greatly
increasing at the rate of 11.1%. All these
factors expose many young boys and girls to new infections of HIV and they look
for means of survival and if they are not diagnosed, they die at an early age
and this robs us of future leaders and development in the district plus the
increase in number of orphans.
Our overreaching goal is to work towards the development, empowerment, and maintenance of a health community. The Organisation currently supports over 600 orphaned children and 162 widows. We are operating in Buvuma District, Kayunga District, Mukono District and Buikwe Districts.
